Labs

And Other Campus Facilities

This is Zeis Hall. It is by far the most awesome buildng on campus, because it houses the New Media Department.

Welcome to the lobby area, where students enjoy a very scenic view overlooking the bus stop. The lobby is sometimes used as an experimental space for gallery exhibitions and installation pieces. It is also the place where students get to stand around awkwardly before class because there aren't enough chairs or tables.

Lab 201 comprises exactly one half of the entire New Media Department. Lab 203 is the nearly identical lab thirty feet away. The nice thing about this minimalist setup is that the equipment checkout desk and all the faculty offices are just a short stroll away. The disadvantage is that all the New Media students get crammed like sardines into one corner of an 86,000 square foot state-of-the-art building.

Prof. Kusek deals out some Photoshop tips in Lab 203. Like a true professional, he doesn't allow anything to distract from the education of his hard-working students, even psychadelic winged tigers licking lollipops.

The NM Equipment Checkout and Information Desk is run by Tina McCants. Tina is awesome, so go visit her and learn about the proper use of cameras and all kinds of other cool equipment with tons of special features you never knew even existed.

Down the corridor past Tina's office and the restrooms is the Hall of Infinite Knowledge, where the faculty offices are. It is recommended to visit these offices when you have questions about assignments, course advising, or just want to pleasantly discuss life and the universe in general. Professors are always overjoyed to set aside their busy schedules when they see the beautiful faces of their wonderful students at the doorstep. There's only one catch; faculty office hours never accomodate your frantic schedule.

Sean's Lab Manager Office! Talk to Sean if you have any problems in either of the labs, because he knows all there is to know about the hardware and software. Also, go check out the 3D printer. Seeing that machine stack plastic resin layer by layer is more addicting than binge-watching Netflix.

Room 221 contains the Video Editing Suite. This room is typically loaned to senior students to work on group projects. Sean is in the process of upgrading this studio space to include more audio equipment and audio editing software.

This bulletin board is used to post internships, job opportunities, and events across campus. Occassionally someone will post new notices, so don't miss out. There is also an events board in Lab 201, a general campus events board near the elevator, and the lobby monitor that can be used by any students to advertise current events.

New Media students like to mix things up every once in a while and set up little installation pieces around the building, just to keep things interesting and confuse random people passing by.

The Media Design lab in Ramsey Library is available to students most hours of the week when there are ongoing classes. The Media Design Lab does not have Maya or other 3D-modeling and animation software, but the staff are friendly and very helpful. Many a project has been saved thanks to their tips and mad software skills.

While you're in Ramsey, go check out the Video Production Suite as well. It has a studio equiped with a greenscreen and controlled lighting, with a range of production-quality recording and editing equipment. Take advantage of this free resource in college, because accessing a studio space like this isn't something you can experiment around in everyday, even as a professional. It is recommended to make reservations in advance if you plan on any extended filming.
